![]() ![]() The comic deals with aspects of reality being an illusion, and the real world being controlled by inhuman masters, before imploring the audience to wake up. In The Invisibles, Morrison creates a narrative about a secret group of freedom fighters who operate on multiple planes of reality and the journey of Jack Frost, who transforms from a regular inhabitant of reality into the next Buddha. The Invisibles does include elements of reality being not as one knows it, but uses the idea of multiple dimensions rather than a simulation of reality. The Matrix's plot bears many similarities to volume 1 of The Invisibles, which includes pretty much everything from The Matrix minus the computer simulation. The Invisibles' alleged influence over the look of The Matrix is one of the key points that hits a personal note for Morrison, who lamented in Rolling Stone's 'Grant Morrison: Psychedelic Superhero' that, "I was told by people on the set that Invisibles books were passed around for visual reference." But while The Invisibles largely resonated with the underground, outsider crowd, The Matrix resonated with everybody. With predominant black leather, sunglasses, piercings and highly defined personal character styles, The Invisibles resonated with the Goth scene and - like its fellow Vertigo book Neil Gaiman's Sandman - likewise inspired aspects of Goth fashion. This was reflected and in some cases anticipated in the various fashion styles depicted by Morrison and the artists who worked on The Invisibles, including notable 2000 AD artist Steve Yeowell, iconic illustrator and frequent Neil Gaiman collaborator Jill Thompson, DC artist Phil Jimenez, and many others. The rise of dance music led the movement to break up into more closely tied factions, from Cyber Goth to Medieval Goth to Zombie Goth. The Invisibles was released in 1992 and was a big hit within the Goth subculture of the time, but the cultural moment was changing. It's obvious that similar to Harlan Ellison's lawsuit over Terminator, Morrison would have appreciated greater acknowledgement regarding the stories their work had seemingly influenced. As is evident in the aforementioned Morrison quote, The Matrix shares many similarities with The Invisibles, including its iconic and stunning visuals. So many of these things started to crop up. The initiated ones who stand between us and the dark side. the comic was becoming a set of cliches - you know, the group who opposed strange forces from other dimensions. So for me it was the end of The Invisibles a kind of a farewell to that and trying to move forward into a different way of thinking, a different way of working. But suddenly it was everywhere you kind of feel that the gazelles have come to your watering hole and are drinking in your water. It was always there in the underground, because that's where I'd come out of. That was stuff that nobody had even been doing in comic books or in pop culture. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Advantage Pro is made with a thick medium-density fiberboard that they finish with multiple layers of paint to ensure a smooth surface and consistent bounce. Its tabletop thickness is just 1/2 inch (13 mm), so it is not that fun to play on. The cheapest version, which we don’t recommend, is the STIGA Advantage Lite. However, it has a 5/8 inch (16 mm) thick table surface. We like the STIGA Advantage Pro version, which is 3/4 inch (19 mm), but you can get the regular STIGA Advantage which is available at a lower price. The playing surface comes in a few different table thicknesses. It’s a regulation-size model at 9 x 5 ft and is incredibly simple to set up, (some people have done it in under 10 minutes). Our 3rd choice is the STIGA Advantage Pro, another very popular recreational table that ticks many boxes you should look for in the best table tennis table. ![]() Our rating – 9.5/10 ( Our STIGA Advantage review ).We highly recommend the JOOLA Inside 25 to anyone looking for one of the best ping pong tables for the basement that will last for many years. The weight could also deter some buyers from the Inside 25, it’s some 44 lbs heavier. Therefore, it simply provides better value for money. Yet the Inside 25 is several hundred dollars cheaper. The two tables are almost identical and incredible in their own right. The reason we rate the Inside 25 ever-so-slightly over the Tour 2500 is simply because of the price. It splits into two pieces which makes it really easy to move around, plus, you can fold up one side to play ping pong on your own. It comes in three table thicknesses, but our favorite is the 25 mm version (the JOOLA Inside 25), which is supported by 1.5-inch thick steel legs to keep it sturdy and safe. It’s a great choice for intermediate or advanced players looking for their first table, or perhaps a family looking for the best ping pong table that’s easy to fold and store away when not in use. It’s up there as one of the most popular table tennis tables of all time. In at number two, we have the JOOLA Inside 25 table tennis table. ![]() Our rating – 9.9/10 ( Full review of the JOOLA Inside tables). The JOOLA Inside 25 - Great Value for Money You can also use the leg levelers to ensure a level playing experience if you have an uneven floor.Īll in all, the JOOLA Tour is a solid USATT-approved ping pong table, and it easily ranks as one of the top JOOLA ping pong tables for the money. However, its eight casters wheels (four on each of the two halves) that lock in place for safety make the table relatively easy to move and fix into place. The only issue when it comes to mobility is that it is quite heavy at 249 lbs. It folds up for personal playback, enabling you to practice independently, and stores compactly when not in use. It’s perfect for recreational play at home, in the office, or more serious play at clubs and tournaments. While the most expensive, we feel that the 25 mm version provides the best value for money. Remember that the thicker the tabletop surface, the better bounce you will get. The Tour series from JOOLA comes in three different thicknesses: the JOOLA Tour 1500 (5/8″), the JOOLA Tour 1800 (3/4″), and the tournament-grade table, JOOLA Tour 2500 (1″). The Tour 2500 is one of our favorite options if you’re looking for an affordable yet quality table with which even the pros would be happy.Īs you’d expect from JOOLA, it has all the features you expect and need. If you look at our most recommended tables, you’ll see that JOOLA knows what they’re doing when it comes to making indoor ping pong tables (five of our top-rated models are by JOOLA). The Johnny Five library is what allows you to control an Arduino (or Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone, Photon, and many more) with JavaScript. Instead, you get to focus on the application logic and utilize the hundreds of thousands of open source libraries to give your project all kinds of functionality with just a few lines of code. With languages like JavaScript, you don't need to worry about the low-level details of things like pointers and memory allocation, which can be confusing for beginners. So what if you could use a higher-level language like JavaScript instead? But even then, as much of an improvement as Arduino is over the traditional way of working with electronics, it can still be a little daunting writing the C-like code. It's a great introduction into programming, electronics, and engineering in general. The last adjustment I made to my prototype is a change of animation speed and curve between states: card.As you probably know (or have heard), Arduino is a great platform to learn and hack on electronics that would otherwise be very difficult to use for a beginner. If you would like to create more states and trigger them correctly, the snippet below will work for you much better: button.onTap -> So, in our case, every time we tap the button layer, we change to the card state. What this does is change all states of the layer one by one, every time you make an action. We have to create an event for changing these states. There is only one more step to make it work. I’ve designed two different states for my card layer: = Please pay attention to the indentation of the code. Now our interaction playground is ready to go. The brand’s penchant for accuracy resulted in its repeated success in the chronometer trials of the 19th century, held at observatories across Germany and Switzerland. The development didn't stop there: in 1999, the company introduced the Co-Axial movement, an invention considered to be the biggest advancement since the introduction of the lever escapement. Developing each movement with interchangeable pattern parts increased construction speed and reduced cost, without sacrificing quality. The process was steadily refined, including the introduction of automated manufacturing methods normally seen outside of the industry. The time-consuming process of making watches by hand, one at a time, was no more. The brand took mass-produced watches to a whole new level of precision and quality, and by 1885, the company was manufacturing the world's first mass-produced movement. If your front door has glass windows, this can be one of the main ways through which burglars can enter your home by smashing the window and opening the door from the inside or climbing in. ![]() ![]() I haven't profiled any of it myself of course, so I'm not sure what typical numbers would be.Ī funny thought would be just sorting the unit vector by active / inactive status, but sorting it may not have a trivial time component and isn't particularly useful if there are multiple flags or fields it checks for this purpose. Linked list traversal is very slow compared to iterating over a vector so I'd expect it to be a bad trade, but it depends on the typical size of the collection and how often it changes. I literally had to be handed a save that had a pathfinding edge case (24 tightly-closed doors) before I even found the pathfinding function, since it's buried so deep due to its, again, not being a major use of CPU time. If I seem bothered by this, it's because I pondered the pathfinding a good deal too before I actually bothered to do the bare minimum work in actually figuring out why the game runs slowly and learned that, no, pathfinding has basically nothing to do with it. You can get an FPS boost from fixing up pathfinding a bit-6% is 6%, reducing that helps!-but FPS death will set in just as it does now, even with magic oracle pathfinding that takes 0 time. Sorry, people have just been wrong about this the whole time. Pathfinding is not a major contributor to FPS issues. I don't know if this is a gatekeepy viewpoint, but I've seen people so hyperfocused on pathfinding, which does not cause FPS issues except in extreme edge cases and tightly-closed door mishaps, that they seem to be convinced that fixing the pathfinding will fix the FPS issues. If you want to contribute to figuring out what is causing FPS issues, first you have to figure out how to actually use the tools that let you find out what's causing FPS issues. blind flailing at nothing of consequence. Trying to optimize a program without profiling is just. A lot of the CPU time in unit checks is wasted in branch misprediction due to the fact that it's checking the units vector and just skipping everything that happens to be inactive/caged/a ghost if those units' indices (or pointers to them, as the case happens to be, unfortunately) were simply cached in a vector that contains only active/uncaged/non-ghostly units, that would be avoided and the game would probably run quite a bit faster. Not to say there isn't some major high-level optimizations to be made. The truth is that FPS death is not a matter of multithreading pathfinding or anything like that, it's a combination of just about everything in there. ![]() This is compared to the largest cause, one whose contribution to total CPU usage actually grows faster than pathfinding and one that is still the slowest thing in early game: units checking other units for line-of-sight/proximity checks (running away from hostiles etc), which is more like 20%. Pathfinding happens so rarely that my profiling has shown it contributes to about 6% of an individual tick's processing time. This usually happens because you're using tightly closed doors. When it does, fortresses drop to sub-single-digit FPS levels. The thing is, it doesn't happen often at all.
